In one alternate Crosstime Traffice did business in, the 1787 Constitutional Convention did not adopt an agreement regarding each state's representation in the national government, and the project was abandoned without generating a Constitution. Over the next decades, the Union continued to slog along under the weak, inefficient Articles of Confederation. By the early 19th century, the United States had ceased to exist, and was split into several different countries (still called "states").
