In production notes for the film, designer Stephen Rotondaro referred to him as a version of Groucho Marx, as is evident by his "Groucho" style face, with glasses, eyebrows, nose & moustache all connected. His costume was inspired by the Mayor of Munchkinland in the MGM film version of The Wizard of Oz.
