Garland is an antagonist in Final Fantasy IX. He's a powerful warlock ruling over the ancient planet of Terra from his research facility, where the party confront him in Castle Pandemonium, although he is first seen earlier in the game piloting the airship Invincible over Alexandria during its destruction. He was left behind by the now-extinct Terran civilisation to guard their souls and find a way of restoring them to life. To that end, he has been assimilating Gaia for centuries (if not longer), and created Kuja, Zidane, and Mikoto to serve as his primary agents in the task of wrapping the process up with a world war or two. Before Garland reveals his identity, he is known to the player as Old Man.
