The game follows the protagonist Max Payne, an NYPD detective turned undercover DEA Agent whose life of the "American Dream" - a loving wife, a new born baby daughter, and a home in the suburbs - one day got shattered. Themes of Norse mythology, and Hong Kong action cinema are prevalent throughout the game. Highly innovative at its time, Bullet Time debuted with Max Payne.
