Pope Leo I was a Roman aristocrat who was Pope from 440 to 461. He is the first Pope to whom the title "the Great" has been attached, being known as Leo the Great. He is known for having convinced Attila the Hun to turn back from the gates of Rome during a military campaign in 452. He was also a theologian, and a leading figure in the centralization of the organization of the Roman Catholic Church.
