VAXMUD was a combat-oriented game inspired by the original MUD. Developed on VAX/VMS, it was written in Fortran at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland in 1987. The game was later distributed to others interested in it, but obviously in binary form only. VAXMUD has significantly influenced at least Nanvaent, a long-standing LPMud.
