Currently, he is the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers of the ECHL, a position he has held since the 2003–04 season. Wilkinson played his entire National Hockey League career with the Tampa Bay Lightning. His NHL career started in 1995 and he lasted until the 1999 season. He appeared in 22 games in his NHL career. He played major junior hockey with the Detroit Junior Red Wings and the Belleville Bulls and was chosen 145th overall by the Lightning in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Wilkinson retired in 2001 after playing a season with the Belfast Giants.
