The Safetynet appears in the second book, The Arctic Incident, where Butler uses it to protect himself from Luc Carere after the latter fired a Koboi weapon at him. The laser was a "Bouncer" and would keep bouncing off the walls until both of them were dead. Butler threw the watch, thus trapping the bouncer within the Safetynet and saving them both. Foaly is the inventor of the Safetynet. It can protect against energy attacks such as lasers and has a 1 meter radius which was an issue for Butler as he was over 2 meters tall.
