Penance Runners are only encountered while playing the Barbarian Assault minigame. The Runners cannot be attacked by conventional means such as melee or ranged attacks. Instead players must either do damage by shooting eggs via the Egg Launcher or lure the Runners with bait to the Runners traps to be killed. It is the job of the Defender to prevent Runners from running south and entering the cave opening, which results in points being deducted from the group score.
