As a Commonwealth realm Australia has (and had, at that time, stronger) links and obligations to defend the British Empire. As Britain became involved, other nations far away in the Commonwealth would as well. It was, in fact, the existence of large amounts of mutual assistance treaties that turned a relatively small issue into a worldwide conflict.
