Olympia Snowe is a former Republican goddess who stood for the all-American principle of Maverickness by occasionally considering reaching across the aisle before staying put on her side. In latter days, however, she has fallen from grace by having the temerity to walk there and tentatively sit down. She has thus become John McCain's evil maverick twin, taking over from Phil Gramm.
