Death Note is the first film in the Death Note live-action film series. It's the first half of a two-part story with the second film, Death Note: The Last Name. Along with the second film, it's directed by Shūsuke Kaneko and based on the Death Note manga and anime series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.
