Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by nine members who are known as The Original Group of 1908. Later, seven other sophomores expressed interest in the sorority, and were accepted without being initiated and are known as The Sophomores of 1910. In 1913, a dichotomy existed within the sorority, and seven members wanted to re-organize Alpha Kappa Alpha. The seven wanted to "establish a national organization, enlarge the scope of activities of the sorority, change its name and symbols, and be more politically oriented." However, graduate Nellie Quander was dismayed at the plans and organized The Incorporators of 1913, who incorporated the organization as a perpetual body on January 29, 1913.
