The Kaeru family was historically a ronin family that ruled the City of the Rich Frog, while the Unicorn Clan greatly ignored this holding. They were nicknamed Kaeru, for the Rokugani word of Frog. The Kaeru family had never been recognized by an Emperor. Their "family name" was in fact more of a nickname than a formal title.
