In an alternate dimension John was the one who died and his twin brother (name John) lived. "The Golden Boy" became the well-adjusted and much loved magician his twin never could. The two Johns got to get glimpses of one another and the Golden Boy was scared of John and attempted to kill him, which led to the two John's souls combining.
