The Company ruled the territory known as 'Rhodesia' between 1890 and 1923 (Southern Rhodesia, later Zimbabwe) and 1924 (Northern Rhodesia, later Zambia) before the British Empire took control. The Company still operates in Zambia today, however, has been banned from revolutionary Zimbabwe in 1980 as part of the Lancaster House Agreement.
