The Mark 89 was used until 2498, by which time most Colonial Militia units had received the new uniforms. The remaining smocks were released to the public as military surplus, with a great deal of the woodland version coming into use by the Insurrectionists, particularly on the colony of Victoria. On the colony, it later became standard issue among both Victorian Independent Military combat troops and rebel militias, netting them the nickname 'spotted hounds' among pro-UNSC fighters, a name that stuck with rebel soldiers on the planet even after the fall of the VIS in 2553.
