Vat meat, various types of protein grown in "biovats" or "protein culture vats," provided a staple of life for people on many stations and planets in the Vorkosigan Saga. It came in many flavors: beef/steak, chicken, and pork were specifically identified as available. Cream was sometimes produced in vats on space stations as well, though cream of "real organic origin" was considered superior. People from some places, such as Beta Colony or Cordonah Station at Jackson's Whole, would not touch meat from animals; others, such as Athosians, Kline Stationers, and Barrayarans, were much less picky.
