Varian was born in 1977. He grew up in Florence, South Carolina. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Oklahoma and an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He currently lives in Austin, Texas.
