The Chief of Staff is charged with the executive management Irish Defence Forces and holds the rank of Lieutenant General. The role is assigned authority and responsibility by the Minister of Defence, and is responsible for planning and public relations in particular. The office of the Chief of Staff (COS) consists of his personal staff, a strategic planning office and a public relations section.
