Glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) is used to describe enzymes that regulate the conversion of glutamate into GABA and carbon dioxide. This, in turn, assists with the regulation of nerve impulses. GAD levels are involved in several diseases including diabetes mellitus, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and Parkinson's disease.
