L&T-John Deere Private Limited (LTJD) was set up in 1997, and began production in 2000, as a 50-50 joint venture between Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) and Deere & Co. to manufacture tractors in Sanaswadi, Pune, Maharashtra, India. The tractors were John Deere design and colors, and bore the L&T-John Deere brand name. Production started at about 10,000 tractors during the plants first year, with plans to be at 30,000 within a couple of years. Over 50% of the tractors are exported.
