Dakota made her acting debut in the film The Golden Compass playing the lead role Lyra Belacqua. She was then cast in two other films "The Secret of Moonacre" (where she played Maria Merryweather) and "Dustbin Baby" playing April Johnson. In late 2010 she was cast in the third generation of the E4 teen drama Skins playing the character Franky Fitzgerald.
