Strauss was a German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras known especially for his operas, lieder and tone poems. He was also a prominent conductor, replacing Hans von Bulow at Meiningen when von Bulow resigned in 1885. The composer, who began writing music at the age of six, was the son of Franz Strauss, principal horn at the Court Opera in Munich. He wrote this Horn Concerto in 1882-83; he wrote two other horn concertos as well as a violin concerto, an oboe concerto, the Duet-Concertino for bassoon, clarinet and orchestra, and many other works for solo instruments. --James Huff 04:55, 18 May 2009 (UTC) (from the program notes of The Claremont Winds, submitted with permission)
