The Retreat is a term used by the elves of the Forgotten Realms to describe a mass migration of their kind from central Faerûn to the west, primarily the island realm of Evermeet. The migration began roughly in the year 1344 DR and continues to the present day, and has affected from 70%-90% of the elves on the main continent. The Retreat is triggered by a form of gut feeling within each individual elf, and some are unaffected by it.
