At the beginning of Who Could That Be at This Hour?, Hangfire is said to be hiding out in Stain'd-by-the-Sea. When Lemony and Theodora arrive at the Sallis Mansion, Hangfire is disguised as a butler. He is good at imitating the voices of others, as he imitates the voices of Lemony Snicket, Ellington Feint, Moxie Mallahan, and Mr. Mallahan . He has captured Ellington Feint 's father, and told her that she will never see him again. In order to get his hands on the Bombinating Beast, he first sends a telegram to the Mallahans, requesting to buy it.
