Olivia Carolyn Pope was born and raised in McLean, Virginia. Her father, Eli Pope, was a CIA operations officer who operated under official cover as an antiquities curator at the Smithsonian Institution. Her mother, Maya Lewis, was a professor at The George Washington University. She died in a plane crash when Olivia was twelve years old. Growing up, Olivia attended several elite boarding schools.
