On 2 May 2009, Bristol Rovers played their final game of the 2008-09 season when they welcomed Hartlepool United to the Memorial Stadium for a League One clash. Although there was nothing to play for for Rovers, with both promotion and relegation being impossible, Hartlepool were still in danger of heading back down to League Two if they suffered a heavy defeat and other results went against them.
