Hether was a midshipman serving aboard HMS Justinian. After midshipman John Simpson failed the examination for lieutenant and returned to Justinian, he antagonized Hether and Midshipman MacKenzie by forcing Hether to wake MacKenzie every half-hour. Hether, along with Cleveland, acted as seconds for Simpson during the duel with Hornblower.
