Roose began his Hollywood career as a lighting technician before becoming an assistant editor under Dede Allen on the films Serpico (1973) and Night Moves (1975, starring Kenneth Mars and Harris Yulin). Roose then tried his hand at sound editing on 1978's The Wiz (again with Dede Allen as senior film editor) before becoming a lead film editor on the 1979 film The Wanderers.
