Auxerre, known as Antissiodorum in Roman times, lies between Paris and Dijon. It had become a provincial capital in the late Roman empire. St. Peregrinus was its first bishop who according to the Martyrologium Hieronymianum was martyred in 304 during the persecution of Christians under Diocletian.
