Duke of Winchester was the greatest landowner in England. On his deathbed, in 1487, King Richard IV tried to get him to sign off his land to the crown. However, the Archbishop of Canterbury threatened the duke with the eternal torments of Hell unless he bequeathed his estate to the Catholic Church.
