Mr Metcalfe, whose first name was never given, was a dishevelled farmer. He bought Crossgill Farm in 1942. His wife died in 1946, which Mr Metcalfe struggled with. He held onto all of her possessions and always looked at them. This lead him to be recluse - neglecting his animals and only really socialising with Matt Skilbeck. In the December 1987, Mr Metcalfe collapsed while building a gate. He rushed into his home where he died in his armchair. His body was discovered by Matt on the next day, and was surprised when he found out Mr Metcalfe had left Crossgill Farm to him.
