James Allan "Jim" Hickey (born September 14, 1930) is a retired American football coach and athletic administrator, best known as the head coach of the New Mexico Coyotes from 1973 until 1994, and as the athletic director at New Mexico from 1996 until 2005. Hickey led the perennially mediocre Coyotes to unprecedented heights, coaching them to a national title in 1980 behind their feared defense as well as four Heartlands conference championships. At New Mexico, Hickey never had a losing season and constantly had the Coyotes high in national defensive rankings. Prior to his stint at New Mexico, Hickey was the safeties coach at the University of Texas from 1962-1972, and a defensive assistant at Southern Methodist, his alma mater.
