An espiritu was a space-dwelling energy lifeform. The Bajorans first became aware of them when Kira Nerys was a child. In 2370, the crew of Deep Space 9 discovered that the Ghost Riders were hunting espiritu by using interphase cloaking devices to be in the same phase as the espiritu. (DS9 novel: The Big Game)
