Barbecue sauce, or BBQ sauce is one of the many braising agents added to (traditionally outdoor) grilled meats and/or poultry. Its origins, mainly by the Spanish, was popularized towards the end of the 19th century, and includes countless combinations of ingredients. The most common are tomato base, vinegar and chili pepper seasonings. In 20th century Canada, the France-inspired variant is more of a broth-based gravy, served with fried potatoes and coleslaw.
