Lumpens were creatures used by the Yuuzhan Vong. Essentially balls of flesh and fur, lumpens were used as means of identification verification by the Yuuzhan Vong. When they were squeezed, they released bodily fluids onto a piece of leathery parchment that the Yuuzhan Vong could understand, thus confirming the identity of the being with the lumpen.
