The Free Axxilans were Galactic Republic loyalists who emigrated from Axxila after the corporate interests that controlled the Ciutric Hegemony declared for the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Separatist Crisis. Many of them relocated to Halmad, among them the family of the young Firmus Piett.
