Silann was a captain in Urusander's Legion. He was married to Esthala, captain and commander of a Legion cohort. Silann and his wife had a testy relationship, often having venomous arguments in the presence of their soldiers. Among other issues, each blamed the other for their son, Endest Silann, joining the priestly orders at Kharkanas rather than choosing a role more supportive of their ambitions.
