Bissell was at one point awarded the Octus Medal for his work as a pharmacologist. After Emergence Day, Bissell and his wife had their deaths faked for them by the Coalition of Ordered Governments and were sent to the island of Azura, where a hidden COG research outpost and doomsday bunker had been set up for the elite of COG society. When Dr. Adam Fenix arrived on the island in 10 A.E., he was shocked to see Bissell was alive and strolling around the grounds with his wife, having attended Bissell's fake funeral several years before.
