Adam Kok orAdam Kok III was a leader of the Griqua people in their encounter with Afrikaner and British expansion in South Africa. Born on October 16, 1811 Kok grew up and was educated in the town of Philippolis in Transorangia (later to be known as Griqualand West). His father, Adam kok II, died in 1835 and, after a succession dispute with his older brother Abraham, Kok became tribal chief in 1837. After a series of land disputes with the British Cape Colony and the Afrikaner/Boer Republic of the Orange Free State, Kok and his followers migrated over the Drakensberg Mountains in 1861, where they founded Griqualand East.
