The Workman was on a coffee break from building work on OAP flats in Rosamund Street in May 1988 when Percy Sugden approached the development, so that he could see for himself the accommodation offered to him by the council following his retirement from the position of caretaker at the Community Centre. The jovial workman annoyed Percy by continually referring to him as "dad", causing Percy to chastise him and move on.
