Bernard Lane was a businessman who met a bored Elsie Howard in a bar one night in March 1978. He bought her a drink and after the pair got chatting, he invited her back to his hotel believing she was a prostitute. She rejected him and lashed out, prompting barman Frank to throw her out of the establishment and threatened her with the police if she didn't leave quietly.
