Potter is the surname of one of the largest, oldest and wealthiest pure-blooded wizarding families in Britain. The Potters descended from a twelfth-century wizard named Linfred of Stinchcombe, and one of his close descendants would marry the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell, one of the famous Three Brothers. The Potters were traditionally sorted into Ravenclaw house at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, followed by a period where sorting into Slytherin was prevalent. Eventually, the Potters shifted from Slytherin house into Gryffindor house, as seen with James and his son Harry.
