The kata was a small furry mammal kept by the Trill as pets. Ezri Tigan owned a kata when she was a child. She hid and cared for the animal in the family hovercraft port for two weeks before her family discovered it and took the kata away from her. (DS9 short story: "Ninety-three Hours")
