The McMahon letters commonly refers to the correspondence between Sir Henry McMahon (British High Commissioner in Egypt) and Hussein bin Ali, Sharif of Mecca. The British at the time were afraid that oil supplies from Persia (current day Iran) might be cut off by the Turks. For this reason they decided to encourage Arabs to rebel against their Turkish rulers and try to gain their independence. They hoped this uprising would distract the Turkish from Britain.
