In 2284, Commander Matthew Renolds assumed command of the Jefferson after his previous command, the Miranda-class USS Polaris, was critically damaged while defending Sherman's Planet from a Klingon attack. Transferring with him was the bulk of the Polaris's command crew. The Martel's impressive weaponry held back the Jefferson until three Klingon Birds-of-Prey arrived to kill Daine for his betrayal. They drew his fire long enough for the Jefferson to penetrate the Martel's defenses and destroy the ship.
