- You can buy me a watch or a diamond ring If you don't have to think then it won't mean a thing It's the thought that counts Not the amount I'm talking to you and it's perfectly true You can buy me a car or the Albert Hall If you don't have to think, it means nothing at all It's the thought that counts Not the amount I'm talking to you and it's perfectly true Give me a present you've thought hard about Something that's taken some time It's funny but money doesn't mean a lot Cheap and cheerful is fine! Give me something small, it doesn't matter at all Something really cheap, something nice to keep It's the thought that counts Not the amount I'm talking to you and it's perfectly true La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, It's the thought that counts Not the amount I'm talking to you and it's perfectly true everytime
- Leslie Uggams sings "It's the Thought That Counts" on A Special Sesame Street Christmas after she receives her Christmas gift from the people on Sesame Street, which is an ugly hat with earflaps chosen by Big Bird. The rest of the cast chimes in, singing about lousy gifts they've also received.
