About: Horothrium   Sponge Permalink

An Entity of Type : owl:Thing, within Data Space : dbkwik.org associated with source dataset(s)

Physically, they are a reptilian species with above average strength and speed similar to Barabels. Originally, they were a predator species that spread throughout their native planet in search of prey. They are capable of seeing into the infrared spectrum, but not the ultraviolet. This allows them to track their prey by heat. Both genders have a horn on the back of their heads made of bone, though the males' horn is larger. These horns were originally used as a weapon thousands of years ago but now is merely a sign of masculinity. Their skin ranges in color and color patterns from red to orange.

The species reproduces rapidly for sentients. Females are known to have upwards of twenty offspring in their lifetime and some have even had thirty-five. With such large families, the species was able to grow rapidly and expand. Originally, the high number of offspring ensured the species would merely survive in the harsh warlike primitive background the species had, but later it would provide plentiful soldiers and workers to fuel the military of the Hegemony. Slowly, the species developed from a simple predatory collection of sustenance tribes into more stable cities and societies. They turned their predatory instincts into a warrior culture that worships war and conquest. Early on in their societal development, an extremely rigid set of laws dictating war and conquest were introduced. These laws became known as the Horot. The Horot forbade any killing of fellow Horothrium under any circumstance, and territorial expansion was only allowed in the case of debt. Murder for any reason carried the penalty of immediate death. Accidental deaths often resulted in enslavement if the offender was judged as being able to prevent the incident. The Horot was universally accepted and would remain with the species for the rest of their existence. These simple laws grew for centuries until they were a large series of dictates and rules that guided the development and expansion of the species. As with the original laws, the penalty for violating any of these laws was execution. None dared break the laws so murder and crime was very low. The species expanded from their home into various other planets. Due to their rapid reproduction rate, the species was able to grow radically and colonize many planets. When they encountered other races, the result was normally the same: conquest. Unlike with their own species, the laws preventing war and conquest did not apply to their neighbors. With their vast numbers and their natural predator tendency, they managed to conquer dozens of planets. Most species either surrendered or joined them. Their empire became known as the Horothrium Hegemony.
