Fairy or spirit marriage is the occurance of a spirit—usually a fae, in fact—approaching a person and proposing a marriage arrangment with them on a few conditions, the most common being that they can tell no one of the true nature of the fairy spouse, usually given away by a strange limb or anatomical feature. As fae have no gender, they can choose to take the form of any person to attract another. Most take the form of humanesque females to approach male persons, leading to the term fairy wife. The reverse can and does occur. Some even whisper of their deepest secrets and fantasies being fulfilled by fairy marriages that could never happen in the community with another person.

True spirits in a spirit marriage would only be able to mentally interact with their bodily spouse and so the marriage pact may include the person not attempting to touch them and never doing anything that would reveal by observation that they were a spirit. When spirits conduct this practice, it is one certainly learned from the fae.
